How barrel racing divisions are split

In a 4D or 5D barrel race, the fastest time of the day, the 1D fast time, sets every other division. Each division starts a fixed number of seconds behind it: 2D at +0.5s, 3D at +1.0s, 4D at +2.0s, and in a 5D format the 5D at +2.5s. A run faster than the fast time is a new race leader.

A tipped barrel adds a 5 second penalty to your run time before it is placed. This calculator adds it for you, so enter the clock time and tick the penalty switch.

Split calculator FAQs

What is the difference between a 4D and a 5D barrel race?

A 4D race pays four divisions and a 5D race adds a fifth. Divisions are set from the 1D fast time: 2D starts 0.5s behind it, 3D at 1.0s, 4D at 2.0s, and in a 5D format the 5D starts at 2.5s.

How is the 1D fast time used?

The 1D fast time is the best time in the race. Every other division start is that time plus a fixed offset, so the windows move whenever a faster run is posted.

How does a tipped barrel affect my time?

A tipped barrel adds a 5 second penalty to your run time. The calculator adds it before comparing your run against the division windows.

What if I beat the fast time?

A run faster than the current 1D fast time is shown as 1D (New Race Leader!) and every other division would move down from your time.

Are 4D and 5D splits the same at every race?

No. Some associations and producers use different offsets, so check your race rules. This calculator uses the common 0.5s, 1.0s, 2.0s and 2.5s offsets.
